If your New Year’s goals include keeping a cleaner home, saving a little cash, and ditching harsh chemicals—you’re in the right place! DIY cleaning solutions check all three boxes.
The issue
Cleaning products such as disinfectants are important for keeping our homes tidy and germ-free. Yet, according to the American Lung Association, many household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Exposure to VOCs can potentially lead to respiratory problems, headaches, and allergic reactions.
The (cleaning) solution!
Ready to get cleaning and skip the VOCs? Below are three DIY cleaning solutions you can make at home with just a few affordable ingredients:
For sparkling surfaces
Fill a glass spray bottle with equal parts distilled water and vinegar. Add lemon peels or a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Spray and wipe for a quick, natural clean!
For grime-free grout
Combine baking soda and water to create a thick paste. Spread it over the grout lines and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Scrub with a brush and rinse clean with warm water.
For clean and clear drains
Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda down your drain, then pour 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit for five to 10 minutes. Rinse with boiling water.
Note: make sure the materials you are cleaning are compatible with the ingredients used in each DIY cleaner.
Store bought buys
If DIY isn’t your thing, you can still choose safer options over conventional ones. Shop at your local natural health retailer, ask a sales associate for recommendations, and always read labels carefully before buying.
