Grape for you
Do you get the same health benefits by drinking purple grape juice as you do from red wine?

Apparently so. A recent study indicated that anthocyanins, beneficial chemical compounds in grapes, were absorbed more effectively from grape juice than wine. The study also found that, compared with red-wine drinkers, juice-drinkers’ bloodstreams were better able to neutralize harmful free radicals.

Soy can be a valuable part of a diet (“Soy Good,” February 2007), but it needs to be used carefully. The increasing interest in soy for food and biofuel raises prices and inspires farmers to clear forests and grasslands to expand soy production.

My husband eats a bowl of cereal with unsweetened soy milk at least four times a week. I am concerned he is eating too much soy.

The research on this topic strongly indicates that you have little cause for concern. Numerous studies have found that consuming soy, including soy milk, miso, tempeh, and tofu, four to five times a week, may help lower cholesterol and prevent prostate cancer and type 2 diabetes.

“I have yet to find a ‘milk’ that’s free of dairy, soy, gluten, and soy lecithin. I use coconut milk in place of cream in recipes. I use it in my coffee. For recipes that call for milk — not cream — I use a mixture of coconut milk and water.”
