Challenge yourself with HYROX
Level up your workout game with HYROX, a form of fitness racing that combines running with functional workouts. Over the course of the race, participants run 1 km and then complete a functional workout station—a feat that is repeated eight times in order to compete the circuit.
Although HYROX races take place in exhibition halls, HYROX training can be modified so that you can do it from the comfort of your own home, at the gym, or on the track. In terms of functional fitness, HYROX incorporates strength-based movement, such as the sled push, burpees with broad jumps, and sandbag lunges.
The benefits of HYROX training include improved endurance as well as increased mobility, strength, and coordination. By combining running with strength-training, you’ll not only look and feel good, but develop faster metabolism and improved bone density, according to new research.
Reenergize with a cup of guayusa tea
Move over yerba mate! Guayusa (Ilex guayusa), a member of the holly family, is one of South America’s hottest wellness exports. Sweet-tasting and free from any bitter flavor, guayusa has fewer tannins than black or green tea, making it easy to drink on an empty stomach.
A rich source of bioactive compounds, guayusa tea caffeine levels are comparable to green and black teas. It’s also a rich source of antioxidants, polyphenols, and L-theanine and is thought to have potential anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties (although more research is needed in this area).
Guayusa is recently gaining popularity in North America and can be found in health stores and online. To brew your own, steep loose-leaf or bagged guayusa for roughly 5 minutes or as long as you prefer (the longer the steep, the stronger the flavor). Serve guayusa tea hot or cold, adding your favorite sweetener, if desired.
Clear your mind with the ultimate audio experience
8D audio is a listening experience that makes sound a completely immersive experience. Also known as brain flossing or binaural beats, the effects of 8D audio are created through the magic of music engineering, specifically, equalization, panning, and effects.
Listening to 8D audio is thought to have a beneficial effect on several areas and functions of the brain, including cognition, anxiety, and long-term memory. While more studies are needed, binaural beats are currently being studied for their positive impact on the severity of ADHD symptoms.
The only requirements for 8D audio? A good set of noise-cancelling headphones—both over-the-ear or in-ear versions with spatial audio will work. Look for free binaural beats on YouTube, Spotify, or wherever you stream music, and let the brain flossing begin.
Nourish your skin with milkweed seed oil
Milkweed (Asclepidacae) is a perennial plant found in the eastern United States as well as parts of Canada. Milkweed is not only a favorite food of monarch butterflies but also the source of nutrient-rich oil extracted from its seeds. The extracted oil is high in omega-6 and -9 fatty acids as well as vitamin E, making it a nourishing addition to a variety of skincare products.
Milkweed seed oil is also touted as a natural alternative to sunscreen although more research is needed to prove that the oil effectively blocks UV rays. In the meantime, you can enjoy the healing benefits of milkweed seed oil by using non-SPF cleansers, lotions, and creams in your self-care routine.
Choosing products with milkweed seed thistle is also beneficial for monarch butterflies. After the milkweed is harvested, it becomes dormant until the following year. By harvesting a small number of seeds from the plant, more room and energy is available for milkweed to grow the following season.
