Pediatricians, pesticide researchers: Pregnant women, children need better protection
April 27, 2011In a strong policy statement issued Monday, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) called on lawmakers to completely rewrite the “ineffective” Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) of 1976 “to protect children and pregnant women and to better protect other populations.” Kudos to the AAP: This situation is upside-down, and it needs to change. Why is the burden on families and communities to try to protect children once these toxins are widely sold and used?

This week, a new study caught my eye: Researchers found high levels of flame retardant chemicals called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in California children, whom they think were probably exposed through household dust and food. Our idea of food safety needs to include chemical contamination, and toxins like endocrine-disrupting BPA that makes its way into food via can liners and other packaging.
